You Don't Mess with the Zohan [2008]

You Don't Mess with the Zohan is a 2008 American\Israeli comedy film, directed by Dennis Dugan and starring Adam Sandler. The film is about Zohan Dvir (Hebrew : זוהאן דביר), Israel's hero and its greatest counter-terrorism army commando who, after growing tired of his Israeli post-draft's standing service, fakes his own death in order to pursue his dream: becoming a hairstylist in New York City. The story was written by Sandler, Judd Apatow, and Robert Smigel. Sandler's production company, Happy Madison, produced the film, and it was distributed by Columbia Pictures. It was released on June 6, 2008 and in the UK on August 15, 2008.
The movie begins with Zohan Dvir (Adam Sandler), an Israeli Special Forces soldier, hanging around at the Tel Aviv beach, attracting several women and capturing the attention of every beach-goer with his Hacky Sack prowess including a clumsy Fizzy Bubelech drinker. Then the film goes to his vacation in Eilat where he cooks fish in the nude, using copious amounts of hummus for himself, his friend and several women. His party favor, catching the fish between the cheeks of his buttocks. As he finishes cooking, an Israeli Defence Forces helicopter arrives, stealing him away from his presumed well-earned vacation.

The Duchess [2008]

Swaddled in whalebone and wigs, Keira Knightley steps into the restricted world of the Duchess of Devonshire, a royal lady popular with her subjects but stuck in an unhappy marriage. If this situation recalls Princess Diana (a descendent of the Duchess's family), so much the better for the purposes of director Saul Dibb and company; this film is eager to draw parallels with the unfortunate Lady Di, even if she is never directly mentioned. Knightley's unsuspecting girl is married off to the Duke (Ralph Fiennes), a distracted jerk who craves male sons, and obviously has never thought of women as anything other than a means to achieve an heir. When the Duchess launches her procreative career with a couple of daughters, well, the Duke begins to get nervous--and partners outside the marriage become increasingly appealing. The Duchess serves up lavish portions of Brit-movie staples: costumes (which, in Knightley's case, are nothing short of spectacular), landscapes,! and gorgeous music (by Rachel Portman). If it falls short in some vague way, perhaps it's because the film is a mostly one-note affair, meaning exactly what it seems to mean at every moment. Charlotte Rampling appears too briefly as Knightley's mother, and Dominic Cooper and Hayley Atwell (from Brideshead Revisited), rising stars both, contribute attractive lures for the principals.

Hunger [2008]

How Osama Bin Laden must laugh at the idea of a "hunger strike". Explaining the slo-mo business to him would be like putting an F-22 Raptor pilot at the controls of Louis Blériot's monoplane. History has lent a new perspective to the story of IRA man Bobby Sands and his 1981 hunger strike in Northern Ireland's Maze prison for political status, recreated here in Hunger, Steve McQueen's explicit, but icily brilliant and superbly acted film. It is a lacerating portrait of an agonised period of British and Irish history; I have watched it twice now, and each time have been unable to forget the famous "Chuckle Brothers" peace-process photo of a grinning Martin McGuinness next to a grinning Ian Paisley. Theirs, remarkably, was the rapprochement that the hunger strikes helped finally to bring about, by redefining terrorist prisoners as political bargaining chips, whose release can be quietly offered in part-exchange for a cessation of violence. The question of which side is the greater victor is difficult to answer.

In Bruges [2008]

The considerable pleasures of In Bruges begin with its title, which suggests a glumly self-important art film but actually fits a rattling-good tale of two Irish gangsters "keepin' a low profile" after a murder gone messily wrong. Bruges, the best-preserved medieval town in Belgium, is where the bearlike veteran Ken (Brendan Gleeson) and newbie triggerman Ray (Colin Farrell) have been ordered by their London boss to hole up for two weeks. As the sly narrative unfolds like a paper flower in water, "in Bruges" also becomes a state of mind, a suspended moment amid centuries-old towers and bridges and canals when even thuggish lives might experience a change in direction. And throughout, the viewer has ample opportunity to consider whose pronunciation of "Bruges" is more endearing, Gleeson's or Farrell's. The movie marks the feature writing-directing debut of playwright Martin McDonagh, whose droll meditation on sudden mortality, Six Shooter, copped the 2005 Oscar for best live-action short. Although McDonagh clearly relishes the musicality of his boyos' brogue and has written them plenty of entertaining dialogue, In Bruges is no stageplay disguised as a film. The script is deceptively casual, allowing for digressions on the newly united and briskly thriving Europe, and annexing passers-by as characters who have a way of circling back into the story with unanticipatable consequences. That includes a film crew--shooting a movie featuring, to Ray's fascination, "a midget" (Jordan Prentice)--and a fetching blond production assistant (Clémence Poésy) whose job description keeps evolving. There's one other key figure: Harry, the Cockney gang boss whose omnipotence remains unquestioned as long as he remains offscreen, back in England, as if floating in an early Harold Pinter play. Harry has reasons inextricably tender and perverse for selecting Bruges as his hirelings' destination, and eventually he emerges from the aether to express them--first as a garrulous telephone voice and then in the volatile form of Ralph Fiennes. By that point the charmed moment of suspension, already shaken by several irruptions of violence, is pretty well doomed. But In Bruges continues to surprise and satisfy right up to the end. --Richard T. Jameson

Hancock [2008]

Would you buy Will Smith as John Hancock, an amnesiac, grab-ass, booze-swilling superhero who flies under the influence and disdains the punk-ass citizens of Los Angeles for thinking he's a superasshole? Trust me, you will. There also exists in L.A. a publicist, Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), committed to making the world a better place. Now, that's pushing it. Director Peter Berg has a feel for guys who screw up (see Very Bad Things), and he mines the herky-jerky script for every toxic glint of macho posturing. It's all hugely entertaining until the final reel, when the film tries for a tragic dimension it can't handle. Leave that to The Dark Knight. The actors save the day. Bateman doesn't make a false move, and a stellar Charlize Theron springs her own bolts from the blue as Ray's wife. As for Smith, he's on fire. There's nothing like a star shining on his highest beams. You follow him anywhere. - Peter Travers -

Ocean's Thirteen is a 2007 heist film directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring an ensemble cast. It is the third (and reportedly final) in the Soderbergh series following the 2004 sequel Ocean's Twelve and the 2001 film Ocean's Eleven, which itself was a remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film of the same name. All of the cast members reprised their roles from the previous installments except for Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin joined the cast as their new targets.

Some time after Danny Ocean (George Clooney) and his crew payed back the millions they stole to ruthless casino mogul Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia), their friend Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould), one of the original eleven, plans to open a new casino. Young People Fucking [2007][18++]

Young People Fucking, also called Y.P.F., is a 2007 romantic comedy directed, written and produced by Martin Gero and Aaron Abrams. It debuted at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival. "Our generation makes an effort to separate love and sex," says Gero. "They're all trying to do this thing, and they're all failing miserably ... we're saying, 'Listen, people our age. This is really hard to do without being emotionally involved.'"[2]
In spite of the unconventionally explicit title, like other mainstream films it is fairly modestly filmed.
"Young People Fucking" is a smart and fast-paced comedy that intertwines the stories of 5 couples over the course of one sexual encounter. As the couples attempt to have some seemingly straight forward sex, they run into all sorts of problems.

Empire Of The Sun [1987]

In 1987, when Steven Spielberg released Empire of the Sun, he was fighting a reputation as a lightweight filmmaker, something not even his previous effort, The Color Purple, had dispelled. This label would dog him until 1993, when Schindler's List defined him as a director with equal command of serious and popular material. Because most of Spielberg's best substantive movies came after 1993, Empire of the Sun is often overlooked. Although it isn't entirely successful - there are times when Spielberg's vision exceeds his grasp - the picture is a good predictor of things to come as well as a successful examination of a setting that rarely gets treatment in Western films.

It's Shanghai in December 1941, and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor is about to change everything for the British citizens living there. The city has been under Japanese occupation for some time, but the invading army has allowed the British and American quarters to continue operating autonomously. However, on December 8, the Japanese move in, confiscating property and consigning British and American citizens to concentration camps. Jim Graham (Christian Bale), a teenager living with his British parents, Mary (Emily Richard) and John (Rupert Frazer), becomes separated from them during the chaos that erupts after Pearl Harbor. He spends time in hiding before joining with American soldiers of fortune Baise (John Malkovich) and Frank (Joe Pantoliano). Eventually, all three end up in the Soo Chow camp, next to a Japanese air base. From there, Jim, who has had a lifelong affair with flying machines, can watch the Zeroes take off and land. As the experience in the camp toughens him, Jim becomes an important cog in the day-to-day activities of the prisoners, although he dreams of a time when he can escape and locate his parents.

Eagle Eye [2008]

In the fast-paced race-against-time-thriller, Eagle Eye, two strangers become the pawns of a mysterious woman they have never met, but who seems to know their every move. Realizing they are being used to further her diabolical plot, they must work together to outwit the woman before she has them killed. (Paramount Pictures)
Director D.J. Caruso takes the next step forward towards being Hollywood’s newest blockbuster thriller director in Eagle Eye. He re-teams with star Shia LaBeouf, whom he found success with in Disturbia by borrowing generously from Rear Window. But Caruso doesn’t want to be Hitchcock, far from it. With Eagle Eye he’s making his play to become the next Michael Bay.

The movie casts the always engaging Shia LaBeouf as Jerry Shaw, a hapless nobody caught up in the cogs of domestic intrigue. He has just returned home to New York after his brother’s funeral, and stops at an ATM where he discovers his normally empty bank account now contains $750,000. As anyone would, he withdraws as much as he can fit in his pockets and heads home, wondering what the hell is going on. He arrives at his dinky apartment to find it too is no longer empty. It is now full, with all the chemicals and weaponry one might need to commit a major act of terrorism. His phone rings. A mysterious voice on the other end warns him he has only seconds to leave his apartment before the FBI arrives to arrest him. Jerry ignores the warning and in shock, remains rooted to the floor until moments later when the FBI’s foot soldiers come crashing through his window and drag him off to jail...

Hamlet 2 [2008]

Hamlet 2, which is directed by Andrew Fleming, centers on David Marschz (Steve Coogan), a failed actor who now works at a high school in Tucson, teaching drama to kids. When the principal informs him that the drama department is being shut down at the end of the semester due to budget cuts, Marschz (pronounced Mars-chhh-zzz) sets out to produce a play in the hopes of inspiring people to donate funds to save the department. Marschz decides that he doesn’t like how things ended for the characters in Shakespeare’s Hamlet and works to write a sequel to the play, which involves a time machine and some other famous people from history.

While working on the play, Coogan has to deal with his perpetually grumpy wife (Catherine Keener), strange and boring boarder, Gary (David Arquette), rag-tag bunch of street kids who don’t get along with the only two drama-geeks participating in the play as well as the resistance of the principal and some of the parents who think the play is too offensive and controversial . Fortunately, Hamlet 2 gives Marschz new direction and the opportunity to show people what he’s capable of.

Burn After Reading [2008]

All the Academy Awards that Joel and Ethan Coen won for No Country for Old Men produced an unintended effect: It made the outlaw brothers respectable. That's got to be driving them nuts. (Have any Oscar winners ever looked more miserable on camera?) Luckily, the idiot-boy side of the Coens barrels out whenever prestige threatens to choke their rebel spirit. Blood Simple begat Raising Arizona, Barton Fink begat The Hudsucker Proxy, and Fargo begat (hello, stoner heaven) The Big Lebowski. For me, the only time the slide into silly didn't work was when The Man Who Wasn't There begat the twin low points in the Coen canon, Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers.

Burn After Reading will have No Country converts running for cover. Instead of a subtle walk through Cormac McCarthy territory, the brothers have conjured a crazy-quilt comic thriller that takes on our growing national stupidity in the form of a sex farce. The result is wildly funny, but just as wildly uneven. Such things happen when the Coens wield their wit like a blunt instrument. But if their control falters this time by pressing too hard on the "quirky" button, it's still a small price to pay for their indisputable daring.

The movie begins with an aerial map of the U.S. as the camera — in a game of "pin the tail on the donkey" — lands on the Beltway, where assholes wag in profusion. At CIA headquarters, perpetually pissed-off analyst Osborne Cox (John Malkovich, never funnier or more frazzled) quits his post before he can be demoted for drunken incompetence. He tells Katie (Tilda Swinton), his doctor wife, that he plans to write his memoirs. "Who'd read that?" she says. Props to the freshly Oscar-ed Swinton for flashing a delicious look of contempt that could freeze lava....

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006) [+18]

Perfume is the long-awaited adaptation of Patrick Süskind's bestselling novel about murder (and smells) most foul in 18th century Paris. Ben Whishaw (Enduring Love) stars as Grenouille, a perfumery apprentice born with an incredible nose and an obsessive desire to bottle the scent of a woman. Gloriously grotesque in its recreation of pungent Paris, it's a Grimm fairy tale for grown ups, slightly spoilt by a plodding, bloated script, and multiplex cinemas' inevitable lack of smell-o-vision.

Whishaw plays the anti-hero of Süskind's novel brilliantly, an idiot savant with remarkable nostrils and a desire to distil the essence of every smell. An equal opportunities sniffer, he's happy hoovering up the scents of dead rats and offal until an apprenticeship with perfumier Baldini (Dustin Hoffman) perfects his olfactory talents - and brings the movie to life. Camping it up with a powdered wig and rouge like the Tootsie of the 1700s, Hoffman steals the show, chewing his way through scenery to bite into lines like "You can no more distil a cat than you can distil the smell of you and me".

Death Proof [2007]

Master director Quentin Tarantino (PULP FICTION) indulges his inner fanboy by paying homage to his favorite B-movies in DEATH PROOF. Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) stalks beautiful women with his deadly vintage car, but when he picks a trio of tough girls (Rosario Dawson, Tracie Thoms, and Zoe Bell), he learns they aren’t such easy prey. As with any Tarantino film, there are plenty of nods to pop culture. Most of the scenes are deliberately short on plot development, the dialogue comes thick and fast throughout, and the film stock is often cleverly manipulated to perfectly replicate the B-movie aesthetic. DEATH PROOF was originally released as part of the GRINDHOUSE double feature with Robert Rodriguez’s PLANET TERROR.

Naruto Movie 4 Shippuuden

Demons that once almost destroyed the world have been revived by someone. To prevent the world from being destroyed, Naruto is to guard Shion, but she predicts Naruto's death. The only way to escape it is to get away from Shion, which would leave her unguarded, in which case the demons would kill her.

Naruto the Movie 4 is the fourth film in the animation installment which is based on the Naruto manga and anime series created Masashi Kishimoto. News of the upcoming movie was announced on November 22, 2006, in that week's issue of Shonen Jump.

The movie will take place during Naruto: Shippūden Hurricane Chronicles. According to teasers in issue 20 of Weekly Shonen Jump, Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno, Neji Hyuga, and Rock Lee will be the main characters. The only detail about the plot given is the vague headline that "Naruto dies".

A trailer for the movie confirms this to be a literal detail. In the trailer, Naruto is attacked and presumably killed by ten figures, all of whom glow dark purple and can fire similarly-colored energy blasts. His headband is cut off during the attack. Several Konoha-nin, the movie's main characters among them, are then seen over a gravestone, Naruto's torn headband hanging from one edge. It is not yet announced whether or not Naruto will be revived or not, but seeing Naruto as the main character, it is well assumed that he will probably live on.

Fly Me to the Moon [2008]

Nat (Trevor Gagnon) is a fly who was born for adventure. Hearing his granfather's (Christopher Lloyd) exciting tales, including the one about the time he flew with Amelia Earhart, has inspired Nat to do something just as grand. Now, he has the perfect opportunity -- the year is 1969, and the humans are about to send a manned rocket ship to the moon. All Nat has to do is convince his pals, IQ (Philip Daniel Bolden) and Scooter (David Gore), to come along for the ride.

Nat is able to sneak past his mother (Kelly Ripa) and get himself and his friends onto Apollo 11, but that turns out to be the easy part. Among other mishaps involving Nat and his friends, NASA realizes that there are "contaminants" in the spacecraft, and the astronauts are instructed to catch the flies. Meanwhile, as the three fly friends are struggle to get to the moon, the mission is endangered by sabotage from the ground.

Angry about the American's imminent success in space, Russian spy flies are out to ensure the mission fails. Luckily, Grandpa's old friend Nadia (Nicolette Sheridan) warns him of the danger, and he sets out to handle things at ground control. Between the trouble in space and what's going on at ground control, NASA will never know how much they owe to the brave McFly family.

Basic Instinct 2 [2006]

Despite its inevitable fate as a critically reviled box-office flop, Basic Instinct 2 sure has a funny way of holding your attention. It's not just Sharon Stone's trash-talk and occasional nudity that keeps you watching, but also the way she gamely earns every cent of her $14 million paycheck, vamping like a real pro in her second outing as mystery novelist and alleged serial killer Catherine Tramell. Now living in London, Catherine sets her lethal sights on Michael Glass (David Morrissey), the control-freak psychiatrist assigned to evaluate her as a risk-addicted suspect in the "accidental" killing of a star soccer player. Turns out Catherine's just getting started (or is she?), and that's bad news for Glass's ex-wife, a tabloid journalist, and the Scotland Yard detective (David Thewlis) who's desperate to put Catherine in jail. With plenty of sex, murder and salacious dialogue, BI2 is certainly never boring, especially with the morbid fascination of seeing the once formidable Stone torpedo her career in a sequel that took 14 years (and countless drafts of screenplays and at least one high-profile lawsuit) to bring to the screen. She's still impressively hot at age 47, prompting critic Roger Ebert to observe, "the Catherine Tramell role cannot be played well, but Sharon Stone can play it badly better than any other actress alive." So, while this ill-fated sequel falls just short of being a guilty pleasure (if only because Morrissey is no match for Michael Douglas in the 1992 original), it's enjoyably absurd and slickly produced, and the hot-tub scene is guaranteed to wear out the freeze-frame function on a lot of DVD players.

JCVD

NEPTUNE releases a new movie by Jean Claude Vandamme. It’s not the usual B-action flicks, this is an actual movie about himself. It’s a really good movie, comparing to the things he made before. I’m definately going to watch this, as he is a Belgian too;)

Between his tax problems and his legal battle with his wife for the custody of his daughter, these are hard times for the action movie star who finds that even Steven Seagal has pinched a role from him! In JCVD, Jean-Claude Van Damme returns to the country of his birth to seek the peace and tranquility he can no longer enjoy in the United States.

Basic Instinct I [1992]

Basic Instinct (1992) is a suspenseful, cat-and-mouse erotic thriller with psychosexual overtones. Its director-writer team of Paul Verhoeven (known for earlier films Robocop (1987) and Total Recall (1990) and then Showgirls (1995)) and Joe Eszterhas (known for Jagged Edge (1985)) created this exploitative, soft-porn, excessive, controversial film known for its negative portrayal of lesbianism, violence, initial X-rating, and voyeuristic, sensational, gratuitous sex.

Womens' groups called the film misogynistic, and gay-rights groups in San Francisco called it stereotypically-homophobic and gay-bashing. They charged that the main murderess suspect in the film was a denegrating portrayal since she was a mentally-unstable, psychotic lesbian and bi-sexual. The film was also criticized for its confrontational scene between the detective and the main suspect's leather-clad lesbian lover.

A critically-lambasted, belated sequel by director Michael Caton-Jones, Basic Instinct 2 (2006) (originally subtitled Risk Addiction) found the now 47 year-old Sharon Stone character (ice-pick suspected murderess and novelist Catherine Tramell) living in London where she was being treated by a psychiatrist (David Morrissey) - who fell for her game of seduction.

Zack And Miri Make A Porno [2008]

"Zack and Miri Make a Porno" goes roughly the direction you'd expect it to go. Zack and Miri make a porno, for example. Then the two late-20s roommates, played by the supernaturally easygoing Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, discover that having sex on camera in order to pay the rent will change the temperature of whatever room they're in together. Permanently.

The film, the latest from writer-director Kevin Smith, pushes its R rating pretty hard, though as with most Smith characters this side of Silent Bob, there's a lot more raunch in the talk -- the sheer, voluminous, often hilarious verbosity -- than in the action.

Fire & Ice: The dragon chronicles [2008]

Fire and Ice: The Dragon Chronicles is about a princess named Luisa who enlists the help of a knight to save her kingdom from a fire breathing dragon. The fantasy film aired on the Sci-Fi channel October 18th for anxious fantasy fans. The film’s credits include “A-List” actors Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy) and John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the Rings), and director Pitof (Catwoman).

The film had the potential to be a great fantasy, it had some beautiful locations and a very interesting concept, but it fell short on the supporting casts acting, art design, pacing and some story structure.

Arnold Vosloo and John Rhys-Davis are seasoned actors and they gave great performances for their parts, but they alone can not carry an entire film. At certain points in the movie the dialogue from the supporting cast sounded very dry, almost like they were reading cue cards.

The art design of the dragons was very innovative, but poorly chosen. The art designers relinquished the traditional reptile nature of the dragon and gave them Godzilla like facial features with the body of a stingray fish.

The pacing of the film wasn’t the worst, but it could have been better. We established the main characters in the beginning of the film and a great bulk of the conflict. The audience had to wade through various character interactions, back-story and dialogue before they were introduced to key action and plot points towards the end of the film.

Fireflies in the Garden [2008]

An interesting looking drama pre’d not long ago with some pretty good actors in it, got a pretty good score of 7/10 on IMDB (although thats with only 390 votes). Video and sound quality look/sound pretty good judging from the sample, enjoy!

To an outsider, the Taylors are the very picture of the successful American family; Charles (Willem Dafoe) is a tenured professor on track to become university president; son Michael (Ryan Reynolds) is a prolific and well-known romance novelist; daughter Ryne (Shannon Lucio) is poised to enter a prestigious law school; and on the day we are introduced to them, matriarch Lisa (Julia Roberts) will graduate from college–decades after leaving to raise her children. But when a serious accident interrupts the celebration, the far more nuanced reality of this Midwestern family’s history and relationships come to light.
